Cherry Grove

She looked me over, as if assessing me for the first time. “I’ve usually gone out with girly-girls, and you’re not like them. You don’t have your nails done or spend a lot of time on your hair or makeup.” I must have been frowning because she added, “You look nice—really nice. But you don’t bring out six different outfits for me to choose from before you can be ready for dinner.”

“We’ve never gone out for a real dinner,” I said. “You might be surprised.”

“Now that I’m off work early, we’re gonna have some real dates. You can surprise me all you want.”

“I didn’t bring anything nice with me,” I said. “I don’t know how pleasant the surprise will be.”

“You look nice in everything I’ve seen.” The moonlight was the only illumination at that point in our walk, and it made her eyes glimmer with satisfaction. I don’t know how the woman did it, but she could make me feel like an ugly hag and a lovely woman all in the same day.

“Thanks.” I tried to hold her hand, but she needed both of them to steady her bike on the banked road.

“Hey, ya wanna try riding the rest of the way? We’re not even halfway there.”

“Okay, but where will you be?”

“I’ll be driving,” she said, her teeth shining in the soft light. “You’ll be riding.”

“On your shoulders or the crossbar?”

“You’re a funny girl,” she said. “C’mon, I haven’t done this since I was a kid. It’ll be fun.”

I gave her a playful shove. “For you.” But I was game to try something new, so I stood still and waited for instructions.

“I love people who aren’t afraid to look silly,” she said. She dipped the bike towards me, and I sat on the crossbar. “Now…hmm…I guess you have to put your arms around me.”

“No! Not that!” I giggled while I awkwardly encircled her neck with my arms. She was bent over and really had to struggle to get the bike vertical, but she did it. She was halfway on the bike seat and still had one foot on the ground.
